Melbourne city water introduces AI into the urban water supply system
Goal
Reduce budget losses due to unreasonable energy costs of wastewater treatment plants
Project
The treatment plants are designed for the daily production of drinking water. Melbourne Water uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to reduce electricity consumption at drinking water treatment plants. The system can understand several unique factors, including tank levels, available pumps, and historical performance.
The project is expected to reduce pump station energy costs by about 20 percent per year. The project is being piloted at one of Melbourne’s major drinking water treatment plants. It treats an average of about 350 million liters of water each day. It’s a factory. The plant’s efficiency is maximized by the emergence of real-time pump configurations.
