Reducing consumption and pollution

Project

Based on data from the waste management system, each independent county has a goal: how much to cut back on waste. The city’s goal is to reduce consumption by 12% % by the end of 2018 and 20% by the end of 2020

To reduce waste disposal or incineration, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has for the first time launched and implemented a “waste management system” at public waste management facilities. 2015.

Based on the management system, each autonomous county takes it upon itself to reduce waste. Once it reaches its destination, it receives 10 percent of the fee charged for a certain amount of waste going to the recycling plant.Reducing pollution

Such an attempt has been successful, with an average of 201 tons of waste reduced per day. In 2014, when the system was not yet officially implemented, an average of 3,088 tons of trash was buried or incinerated daily.

In 2017, however, it was 2,887 tons, down 6.5 percent from 2014 (201 tons per day). The total amount of waste that decreased in 2017 is almost equivalent to the total amount of waste dumped daily in both the neighborhood (132 tons) and the Gimcheon-gu neighborhood (69 tons).

The city government is setting new goals of a 12 percent reduction by the end of this year and a 20 percent reduction by the end of 2020. It also plans to reduce the direct dumping of bulky plastic trash bags at landfill.
