A medical team in Beijing performed remote ophthalmic surgery on three patients using 5G technology in March 2021. They were 3,000 kilometers away from Beijing: the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China. The partner was the telecommunications company China Mobile.
Chen Youxin, director of the ophthalmology department at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), obtained eye fundus photos from a local hospital in Tumshuk, Xinjiang.
He then developed and sent surgery plans for three patients, two of them elderly, via the 5G network. The automated medical device performed successful laser surgeries based on them.
Results:
The use of 5G technology allows physicians with basic training but no subspecialty skills to perform surgeries while consulting with colleagues remotely.
Stages: March 2021.
